Natural make-up remover recipe

For a very long time, I have used the same make-up remover that I thought is good for me. Didn’t stress too much about it, because it did the job was intended for, was affordable and I could find it in most drugstores or even supermarkets. Then one day, while working as a graphic designer in a print house – my first job ever – I had to design a label for a very well known cosmetic brand. Part of the design project was the back label which contained the barcode, instructions and...ingredients. The ingredients were something I couldn’t even pronounce properly, so while I was trying to write them down carefully not to miss a single letter, I was wondering what they were and started to do a quick research. Needless to say, from that day on, the only make-up remover I would use would only be made of natural ingredients, and nothing that I can’t even spell will ever touch my skin again.

When it comes to making my own natural make-up remover, I always try the simplest recipes, because I’m not a very patient person and don’t have a lot of time to spare. I also care where the ingredients come from and how long the homemade product will last.

Benefits of making your own make-up remover

It's healthier

This is the top of the list benefit and the most important.  Self-made make-up remover is healthier because it contains natural ingredients sourced carefully by you from trustworthy suppliers.

It's Sustainable

Goodbye plastic bottles that end up in landfill!  All make-up removers you would normally find in a store come in some sort of packaging and mostly in plastic bottles which end up in landfills. Making your own make-up remover is good for the environment because you will use and reuse the same container indefinitely.

Saves you money

I agree that make-up remover doesn’t cost an arm and a leg necessarily, but if you had to add up all the money you spent so far on it, you would probably have enough to spend on a little getaway. Making your own make-up remover can be cheaper but it depends on what and how many ingredients you use. I use organic and plastic free ingredients and they can make the price go up a bit.

These are 3 recipes of natural make-up removers that anyone can do and hopefully will encourage you to ditch the classic store-bought make-up removers. The best part is that you’ll only need 2 ingredients for each of them!

1. Witch Hazel + coconut oil

Witch Hazel is a plant that has numerous benefits for skin, such as reducing skin irritation and fighting acne. It’s a very common ingredient in a lot of natural make-up removing recipes.
Used on its own, it can be difficult to remove stubborn make-up like waterproof mascara and eyeliner, but combined with coconut or jojoba oil makes wonders.

The handiest way to mix these ingredients is by putting them straight into the bottle and giving them a nice shake. Use the mix like you would micellar water but remember to always shake the bottle beforehand.

2. Rosewater + Jojoba Oil

Rosewater has been used for thousands of years as an ingredient for beauty products and it’s made from rose petals that are distilled with steam. It has been proven to have anti-ageing properties, soothes skin irritation and reduces redness.

Mix the rosewater and the oil together by putting them in the bottle and shaking well. Easy!  If you have a spray bottle lying around somewhere, use the rosewater on its own as a face mist or body spray. It can gently remove some make-up on its own as well.

3.  Aloe Vera Water + Olive Oil

Aloe Vera is a must-have in any home. It has more benefits than you can count and it’s not even that hard to care for. As a make-up remover ingredient is beneficial to acne prone skin due to containing salicylic acid..

You'll first need to make the aloe vera water with aloe vera pulp and water if you don't have it already. This video will explain it better. Put the main ingredients together in a dark glass bottle and shake thoroughly until mixed.

These recipes are perfect to start making your own make-up remover because they take only seconds to make and you probably already have the ingredients.
